Profile: Dr. Effie O’Neal Ellis (1913-1994)

Dr. Effie O’Neal Ellis was a North Side Chicago pediatrician, child medical care consultant, and an activist for infant health and maternal education. Ellis was the first African American woman to hold an executive position in the American Medical Association. In 1989, Ellis was inducted to the Chicago Women’s Hall of Fame for her efforts in improving the lives of the black community and helping to lower infant mortality rates.

Profile: Wilda Gerideau-Squires (1946-)

Wilda Gerideau-Squiresis an African-American fine art photographer noted for her distinctive style of photography which includes abstract images created through the interplay of fabric and light, as well as her poignant photographs of women. In 2008, Women In Photography International named Gerideau-Squires among the world’s most Distinguished Women Photographers. Her photographs are included in the Peter E. Palmquist Collection at Yale University’s Beinecke Library, the State House Office Building in Boston, and private collections in the United States and Canada. Profile: Bill Gaskins (1953-)

Bill Gaskins is an American photographer and academic. His work explores the intersection of black hair and a critical analysis of the portraiture in the 21st century. In his book Good And Bad Hair: Photographs, Gaskins tackles the role of hairstyling and the representation in African American culture and he also examines the transcultural role of hair, adornment of ornaments, and personal identity with the body.
