Revisit: ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA RIOT

On October 24, 1996, an 18-year-old black man, TyRon Lewis, was stopped for speeding in St. Petersburg, Florida. Witnesses claimed that a white police officer, James Knight, had pointed a gun at Lewis during the stop. Knight told Lewis to get out of his car and to place his hands on his head. While he did this, the car was still in gear and began to roll forward. This prompted Knight to open fire on Lewis, shooting him to death. Continue reading Revisit: ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA RIOT

Revisit: PATERSON, NEW JERSEY UPRISING

The 1964 Paterson, New Jersey uprising lasted from August 11 to 14.   The uprising occurred simultaneously with a separate uprising in nearby Elizabeth, New Jersey, and both, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), were the consequence of the larger uprisings in New York City (July 18-23), Rochester, New York (July 24-25) and Jersey City, New Jersey (August 2-4). BALTIMORE PROTESTS AND RIOTS, 2015

The death of a 25-year-old black man, Freddie Gray, while in the custody of the Baltimore Police Department led to an outcry in Baltimore, Maryland, and eventually across the nation. As the tensions became greater, peaceful protests became violent and resulted in the most extensive rioting in Baltimore since the 1960s.
